– this morning I visited shake Harlem, to ask a few questions to help develop a menu for our milkshake stand and to create a price range, also to take some pictures to show the development of our idea within our portfolios
– firstly I asked for permission to ask the questions and have their participation accepted to be shown in our work, this was verbally granted by the worker and her manager.
– here is the mini questionnaire

– once I had gathered the information I came home to continue my research in menus, collecting various prices from different milkshake stores and looked at a few alcoholic milkshake prices that are being sold in rare bar. I used the information to create a moodboard shown below to present to my team in our meeting on Wednesday, I am also creating one on the milkshakes I’ve found and cocktails to help narrow down our flavours, and my third mood board is focusing on the glass containers we want to use, as they will be from the steam and rye theme of quirky and different glass containers such as cowboy boots, shark heads, ours will link with our garden theme, I have thought of a few ideas and will show them to my team on Wednesday as well.
18/10/14
As my boss has been working with alcohol and the public since he was 16, I thought he would be the ideal person to interview my boss about what spirits would be the best mixer to have a milkshake.
– I also have asked my customers and colleagues to fill out our public survey to gather some information on our milkshake idea, and hopefully this will give us a prediction of its success and narrow down a menu for us

– today my team are ahead of schedule as all Wednesday’s moodboards covering their research ideas into the interior design and alcoholic milkshake flavours are ready. They have emailed them over to me via our university email as shown, and as mine our ready to we have now moved into thinking about our menu selection

21/10/14
– scheduled in for today was lestyns sketchbook development, where he looked over our work to see if we was heading in the right direction in our development teams for conceptual connection.
– As myself and my team showed lestyn our spider diagrams, mood-boards and described our idea to him, we realised we had jumped to far ahead. Instead of creating several miniature ideas we went straight to our final idea, he explained he wanted us to have more than one to show how we have developed and researched a mixture of hypothetical events for leefest. He also stated he wanted to see more work on paper rather than us discussing it, as we have discussed various ideas shown on our spider diagram but just dismissed them verbally and haven’t shown how we got to our final idea.
– there fore we made a team decision to put our final idea on the shelf and come back to it after developing a few more ideas which we may find interlocking with our original idea.
– as producer we had our weekly meeting today, as charley won’t be able to make tomorrow’s usual slot due to external circumstances. I have asked for a mood-board, research and a visual development of another idea for us to have as a back up plan and all three of us will do this, as we already have a few ideas from some we discussed before our inside garden plan, we have also agreed we will bring these creations to our pitch as a back up option to support our teams ability to create a event in case our inside garden is rejected, we will be able to show we can have more than one idea and our a creative team.
– I have also requested for our inside garden/alcoholic milkshakes moodboards to be brought in so we can see the development process we have and will continue to produce
– I feel there has been a bit of miscommunication within the brief as one tutor has told us to have a final idea, whereas another is telling us to have more than one and more development research
– however this has helped my team as we now have a second option we are keen to include within our inside garden.

22/10/14
– using the research I found at the begin of our development work for our event idea I found this link… Informing me attendees at leefest would like to see a tapas stool or a pie and mash stool. I decided to take the pie and mash stool idea and try to develop some ideas to create this into a tent at leefest as a alternative to our alcoholic cocktail tent. I began this by researching into the first ever pie and mash shop which was located in the east end, it is called m.manze and was opened in 1902 by Michelle manze. Serving up a traditional British dish of pie, mash, gravy and jellied/stewed eels. I found out it is still open today and uses the same recipes from 1902 but has improved the quality of ingredients.
– the restaurant now offers cockney themed evenings, parties or the ability to fit in any type of occasion there, they have also expanded their business by becoming suppliers of pie and mash to the outside world that wish to sell their authentic meal at other outlets
– after reading the sites about us section I decided to take two words from their description to brainstorm from, these were cockney and jellied eels.
Here are how my spider diagrams and mood boards turned out for them (insert pictures)

Development team meeting
– today was our scheduled weekly meeting, where we presented our moodboards to one another. My team seemed to like my idea of the only fools and horses theme, where I stated we would sell the pie and mash from one of the most cockney themed television programmes and is a comedy Classic in Britain. I stated how we would already have a supplier, and it is definitely something leefest doesn’t have, however we are still keen on our inside garden idea, which after seeing charley moodboard we want too make it more jungle themed, and instead of putting the glitter make up in for customers to get we will put animal glitter prints upon our staff.
– as we our debating between two solid ideas that aren’t in leefests fields, we have decided to research into van food retailers to see if it is possible to create our pie and mash van, designs of the van so we can make it more unique and find a design that will give the customer something extra/different and create a large attraction, and lastly I am going to create a public survey asking comparison questions on the alcoholic milkshake tent or the pie and mash van to try and get some statistics on what one will be more popular which will then help us decide upon one event idea
– we also have to discuss with our tutor if a van would be acceptable and doable for our scale model presentation
4/11/14
After our meeting with lestyn informing us we should try and make our jungle shack have a connceptual connection, we decided to create a tropical cocktail shack instead as the two themes link as you would relate a fruit cocktail to a tropical island, and also you can connect the names of the cocktails to the theme itself.
The team and I have gone away to create some more moodboards based on tropical furniture, glasses and interior/exterior design to bring fourth on Thursdays lecture.
6/11/14
– this morning we spent our time sharing our ideas we had developed over the past few days. once we looked over each other’s mood boards we stated which bits we wanted to include within our event: including- tiki glasses, dry hay roof, bamboo made chairs
Include mood-boards
– Debbie showed us a mood-board on tropical themed cocktails she found made from fresh fruit, we decided too choose two each we like the sound of for our menu then using a website charley had shown us called Lola, and combining a few glass ideas I had collected we assigned our cocktails to a themed glass
– we have decided to make shots of different alcohol and serve them in smaller fruits, such as strawberries and limes. As for your sharers we will put them in a melon and watermelon using the actual fruit shell as a container giving us that uniqueness we need to make us different from all the other cocktail stools
– we have also create a sharer for two people which will be served in medium sized fruits such as coconuts and pineapples
– I have created a list of ingredients to gather the price list as shown:
– we will also offer wine/alcoholic lollipops, for a refreshing taste after a hot and sweaty few hours of dancing in the sun. It isn’t usually done, and can be for he cliental who aren’t a huge fan of cocktails.
– we have also typed up the menu displayed below which will show you all the cocktails we will have on offer but the final menu will be designed by Debbie
– our final idea has now developed into a tropical themed shack, which will serve organic, healthy cocktails made from fresh fruit and also served in fresh fruit. The development process has rapidly evolved from our first meeting, it emphasises the constant trial and error event designers go through, it has shown me there will never be one straight forward idea, you have to create alternative ideas as well as your main one to ensure you can please your client.
7/11/10
– we began brainstorming for a new name that could be developed into a logo as well, our previous name for our milkshake bar was found by researching into jungle names and linking it to alcohol. There fore we followed this routine but on tropical islands, which is where we found cayo coco and will draw in coconuts and palms trees to the letters rather than relating it to alcohol for our logo

9/11/14
This weekend I met up with my boss, who has created his own events before and managed the stock intake and outtake.
He informed me that my original profit margin was to low as I thought it would be a good idea to reach for 20%, hoping if we beat a easy target it will look more impressive. He stated you should go for 80%.
He then explained we had too many alcoholic options and needed to cut them down as we may sell one spirit more than another, meaning we will be left with untouched stock losing us money. We then discussed how too work out how many bottles of alcohol we will need of each spirit, he explained it all depends on your spirit measurement and that a 50ml (which we are serving) will give you 14 portions with one bottle of vodka for example.
I then went home and worked out 80% of 2.500 people which was 2000 cocktails being sold per day at leefest. I then gave each spirit a individual dale percentage and found the bottles prices as shown:
Which then lead me to dividing the price of the stock by the spirits individual sale expectation, then multiplying it by 1.8. Giving Us the price that will earn our event 80% of the profit
Finally I found the costs of all the spirits and now just need to add the mixers expenses to collect our final price
11/11/14
– today myself and our teams designer met with candida to discuss our groups development and progress.
– we explained through our visual moodboards to how we got to our tropical shack and fruity cocktails
– candida explained how we needed to be more sustainable and to stop making it so perfect, almost making it more like a urban garden rather than a shanty shack which they actually are designed to look like. Therefore we discussed a few new design ideas and have opted for little umbrellas as sheltered seating are scattered in front of our shack, completely disposing the tent idea and making the wood upon our van more shabby, having odd pieces of wood that don’t match and putting a few random colours on each strand too give it a unique, recycled and shabby image. This will also make the creation of our model more sustainable as when we get the wood it will be easier to use recycled wood and it will not be a issue if they don’t match
– we will keep our furniture similar to our original design as they are sustainable and can be altered to look more shabby and used such as the crates with leaves
– for the little umbrella shades, we will use dry hay for the shelter cover and bamboo poles to keep it upright.
– charley and I discussed opting the van for a actual shack to help it fit in with out theme more, but I stated the van is still a good idea due to the way it is easier mode of transportation of our event, but we should make the van bigger so it doesn’t look like we’ve cramped a lot of design onto a little van
– we have informed Debbie of our alterations and have asked her to do some research into Shacks, asking her to recreate her logo as we have changed the name to castaway, also to look into more shabbier menu designs. Charley has gone away to create some more design moodboards on our new look which I will do to, along with background research into shacks and the castaway movie
20/11/14
– myself and charley visited the 4D model workshop to purchase some materials for our model, we managed to find 4 different types of wood, all different colours to emphasise the recycled look as they are all various widths, shades and types of wood. Charley will also create the shanty look by painting a few bright colours here and there on the some strips to portray the image we found and have based our design on
– for the roof we found a plastic sheet with ridges that can be easily painted and will be transformed into a rustic metal prototype for our roof.
– we then made a enquiry about our bars sign, this is what we are aiming for but a more wooden theme
-The employee explained how we will need a parallel circuit, due to the amount of bulbs we need he stated it will be difficult to use battery powered circuits, therefor we need to look into LED strip lighting circuits to gain the look we need, also that it will be a more practical way to make it this which I will look into this evening.
25/11/10
– to make our tent even more sustainably friendly, we took the information we learnt from our trip to the White light company and decided to use a hydrogen fuel cell generator to run our signs LED lights from and worked our the amount we need and the costing after he helpful advice I received from Craig bennett

Today I spent time looking for second hand catering vans to reduce our budget to at least meet the costs of our event, as after my previous calculations our budget was not meeting our income. After bills lecture he emphasised a events budget must at least meet our incomes price to be able to afford all of our supplies, decoration and props. The search turned out to be successful as I found one on eBay for £2,000 it will also suit our recycled theme. To reduce the budget even further I looked for companies that rent glasses out and have calculated the prices to hire our un themed cocktail glasses and have also looked at prop houses for a few of our decorations, we will now be hiring the umbrellas, a few of the glasses and using a second hand catering trailer
– finally we had everything we needed on the budget and I calculated the final price, leaving our budget at a final cost of £29,650, and leaving us with £10,760 profit after taking away the budget from the overall income of the weekend.
– I also called round generator companies to find a quote on a generator supply for the weekend which is now in the budget
– here are the emails of the companies I contacted for my information
– to create the pineapple I cut off the head of plastic spoons and painted them yellow, then stuck them on a plastic Evian bottle layer after layer to get the image of a pineapple shell. To make it look more natural I gently smudge brown paint onto the yellow spoons. For the top of the pineapple, I cut the head of my left over spoons into a spike shape and painted them green, after glueing them onto the base I cut up some sponge from my washing sponges and painted them green once I stuck them down. The leaves were simply made from green card but painted green once again so the top of the pineapple was all matching
01/12/14
– today I made the second cup for the presentation, which is a strawberry, inside will be a shot of alcohol
– to make this I blew up a balloon a quater of its original size and cover it in paper mache, once it was dry I simply painted it red and painted gold seeds ontop of the red to make it look like a strawberry. I then cut off the top half and cutter a wedge of lime’s shape onto a piece of card board and covered it again in paper mache, once it was dry I painted it green and drew on the lines with a pencil to portray a limes seeds and natural dents and marks.
– to create the tequila lime shot I used a old lemon juice container and cover it in paper mache and paint it green, then cut off the top to make it look like it would with the tequila inside
2/12/14
– today we had a rehearsal with david Clements, instead of presenting we ran through what we had and wanted to ask
– it was very helpful as we have now been made aware of what he is expecting to see on our presentation boards/slides and we are beginning to create the order of what we will present and when
– myself and charley marked the wood we need to cut to stick onto our model and all different lengths to create the recycled look of our can, we will then cut these tomorrow so charley can begin to stick them down onto our trailer

The last week was dedicated to creating the presentation, model and last paper documents or models we needed
